about

I live and write on the unceded lands of the Tsawout, Quw’utsun, and Stz’uminus Nations (colonially known as Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada). I honour and recognise the countless sacrifices made by our Indigenous hosts so that I may live in privilege here. The original languages of this island are SENĆOŦEN (with fewer than ten first-language speakers remaining) and HUL'Q'UMI'NUM' (with about 30 first-language speakers remaining). I commit to using my privilege to deepen my knowledge of local Indigenous cultures and to honour and protect this land that Indigenous peoples have stewarded since time immemorial.

Thank you for visiting my website! When I was growing up, the library was my favourite hang-out spot. Each week, I checked out as many books as I could carry, and with each book, I cracked open the cover, took a deep breath, and jumped into another life.

At university, I studied literature, and between courses, I helped dig a water pipeline in the Dominican Republic and flipped burgers for a summer at a McDonald’s in Germany. When I graduated, I cycled 6000 kilometres across Canada, became a travel writer, taught creative writing in the Arctic, and worked as a simulated patient for medical students to practice on. I also married the pen pal that I’d been writing to since I was fourteen years old, and together we traveled around his home country of Argentina.

I began writing for kids because kids’ books have always been the ones I most enjoyed reading. These days, when I’m not writing or going on adventures, you can find me outside, watching the birds, hiking, swimming, or pedalling around town. I live with my partner and our fantastic kid who generously provided the artwork for this website. I love to hear from readers, so if you’d like to send me a message, please visit the contact page!
